Skin Care in your 40’s & 50’s.

Whether you are a skincare minimalist or maximalist, your regime will change over time to tailor to your changing skin. As you age, your skin has the tendency to become prone to itchiness and dryness, it is important to support your skin’s barrier through nourishing & soothing formulations. We also need to be considering our fight against gravity and the evolution of fine lines, wrinkles, texture, and loss of volume.

There are two proteins that are imperative in giving your skin strength and structure, these decrease in production as we age, however, we can help increase the production and assist in reversing the effects.

It’s so important to embrace your own beauty, the fine lines and all, ageing is a normal part of life and happens to all of us. The key to navigating through this time is a stable and effective skincare regime full of supportive and effective ingredients alongside treatments tailored to your skin concerns & goals.

Some information that might help guide & educate you in your skin regime:

Step 1: Cleansing

Your skin can be slightly more sensitive or reactive as you age, it also doesn’t produce as much oil as it used to, so you need to give it extra support where possible. The best way to do so is with a milk cleanser, now there is a huge debate about milk cleansers, especially with our clients because of the way it makes your skin “feel”, because of their protective & nourishing abilities milk cleansers sometimes can feel like there is a film (as it’s been described in the clinic) on your face or that it hasn’t been cleaned properly. You need to use your milk cleansers on dry hands, with a dry face, and emulsify it into your skin for a minimum of 60 seconds (using upward movements) to allow it to break down any makeup and/or dirt. You don’t want your skin feeling tight or dry you want the opposite!

Step 2: Exfoliation

Regardless of your age, we all need exfoliation, however as we age we may need to reduce the intensity or avoid certain areas. Our go-to is the Lotion P50V, it is P50 however with some more supportive ingredients. We also recommend an at-home treatment twice a week, this can be the Lira Pro Anti-Aging pads paired with a masque from Biologique Recherche or the DMK at-home enzyme. Chat to one of your dermal clinicians about this, you don’t want to over or underdo it.

Step 3: Targeted serum

There is always one thing we want to work on whether it’s redness, firmness, or pigmentation. This is the time to put a serum targeting a concern or to help reach your skin goal.

Step 4: Hydration

We want to provide lipid support to increase vibrancy and elasticity in the skin, this is where you think about the thick moisturising cremes if you aren’t a fan of the feeling of these we have the PCA hydration booster or a dry oil to give that much-needed support. We always have a way around preferences so don’t be turned away.

Step 5: Vitamin A

Now this will not be the exact step where retinol will sit in your regime, that’s what we do in the clinic for you but it is an important step in your regime. Vitamin A will help stimulate the production of collagen and elastin which is needed especially because your production has significantly decreased. It’s important to only introduce this slowly and under the guidance of your clinician.

Step 6: Eyes

The skin around your eyes is already thin but becomes increasingly thinner with age, this can lead to dark circles and puffiness, it’s important to have quality ingredients that suit your skin type and concern. We have a large number of creams and serums to treat all of the above!

Other things to note:

SPF - the sun is a huge contributor to speeding up the aging process, we want to slow this down but also try and reverse some of the damage caused (we all know about the coconut oil and the sun) and prevent any further damage.

Treatments - in-clinic treatments are going to be the game changer for treating & preventing wrinkles, pigmentation, and all the other fun stuff! Your skincare will work more effectively when combined with treatments, it will absorb in deeper levels of the skin and work more effectively to influence your skin cell turnover.

If you feel your skin changing or want to revamp your skin regime, book in for a consultation, or if you are an existing client a skincare redesign today!

And remember your face ends at your neck!
